EPISODE 35

Stu Bayley // REALTIME

THE LIFE OF AN ART DIRECTOR

DISCUSSED DURING THE SHOW:

  • How Stu Bayley started his career as a Fashion Illustrator, drawing figures for the purpose of marketing and over time worked his way into Art Directing.
  • How establishing friendships with colleagues, who are now some of the top guys in the industry, can really shape a career and direct a path. Notably, Stu has worked with John McCoy, one of the best Concept Artists out there, working on all the Star Wars films, and Steven Mullaney, who went to NBC to work as a Texture Artist getting to the top of the game there, he now works as a Character Artist.
  • The transition from Character Concept Designer and into Art Direction was certainly not an easy one for Stu, with lots of new challenges along the way.
  • Stu now works for REALTIME, Art directing for companies like, Aston Martin, Volkswagen and McLaren manging a vast team, helping to produce super high-end marketing imagery for a variety of purposes, including TV. Stu recently worked on the Game of Thrones Trailer.
  • Much of the Art director's role is pitching ideas to both clients and team, making sure that the clients wants and needs are translated and carefully developed.
  • How the industry is quickly and significantly changing with the new design programmes coming out.
  • Those looking to work in these industries need to have a fairly broad skillset - effects work, modelling, a bit of shade work and maybe someone who has done their own personal projects.
